Statement from Caitlyn Adams, executive director, Missouri Jobs with Justice Voter Action
While it’s clear politicians have complete disregard for democracy, Missourians have shown they will come together to protect their rights. On Wednesday, 5,000 people showed up in Jefferson City to defend democracy and still the Missouri legislature has attacked direct democracy by attempting to end majority rule. This is a blatant attempt to silence Missourians’ voices.
Rather than listening and respecting the will of the people, some politicians are rigging the rules to favor wealthy special interests and trick voters into giving up our power.
Majority rule is about fairness– HJR 3 would attempt to let 10% of the electorate veto something 90% of the voters want to pass– so a small number of voters could block the majority from having the final say on statewide policies.
It’s up to us to come together and reject this on the ballot and show these politicians that the power of the people is greater than the people in power.

Governor Kehoe’s illegal gerrymander scheme is an attempt to silence Missourians’ voices. This important process of drawing Missouri’s Congressional representation should support democracy, not abuse it. Gov. Kehoe also snuck in a special session scheme to gut the initiative petition process, end the practice of one person, one vote, and get rid of majority rule in Missouri.

Democracy means voters get to pick their elected officials – politicians should NEVER be in a position to pick their voters – that’s just wrong. Missouri Jobs with Justice Voter Action will not be silent and we stand together with the majority of Missourians who oppose this power grab.
